He was educated in the US, spending three years at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After graduating from MIT, he went on to co-found two information technology companies; Dimension Data (NASDAQ: DDSY) and Infospace (NASDAQ: INSP).

At the age of 28, Santiago was named one of the top 50 business innovators under the age of 40 by the MIT Technology Review. In 2018, he was named to the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Hall of Fame for his “outstanding contribution to the development of business in the Asia-Pacific region.” He is the first Latin American to be named to the Hall of Fame.

Santiago's first business venture was Dataline, which he founded with two partners in 1987. The company created an electronic data interchange (EDI) platform for trade and transport purposes. In 1995, the business was bought by American Express, and later that year, Santiago founded Infospace. At Infospace, he developed a group of enterprise software solutions for use in the insurance industry. After spending several years developing the company, Santiago sold a controlling interest in Infospace to Boston Ventures for $27.5 million in 2004.

The Rise of Cloud Computing

In 2005, Santiago founded Dimension Data. The company, which provides enterprise-class data center and cloud services, took 18 months to secure its first contract, which was awarded to the business in February 2007. In 2010, the company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Between 2014 and 2016, the company went public, and as of January 2019, Dimension Data is valued at nearly $8 billion. Innovative Deals

At DIMENSION DATA, he led the development of Elavon, an enterprise software solution designed to help insurance companies manage the claims process more efficiently.

Santiago has said that being a serial entrepreneur has its perks, as “you get to try out a lot of different concepts and get to learn from your mistakes.”

He has also said, “Some people see creativity as a weakness, but I see it as a strength…If you're not creative, you're not going to come up with very good ideas, and if you don't have very good ideas, you're going to be very limited in the kinds of business you're able to start or participate in.”

Beyond the Entrepreneur

Santiago has also been involved in several not-for-profit organizations, including the Entrepreneurs' Partnership, the American Association of Advertising Agencies (4A's), and the Hispanic Advertising Agencies (4As).
